Biography:
Edgar Degas: French (1834-1917) Born in Paris, Degas is a master in drawing the human figure in motion. He studied at the Ecole des Beaux Arts, influenced by influential artists such as Edouard Manet & Jean Ingres. Son of a wealthy banker and aristocratic family, he frequently attended rehearsals of the Paris Opera, sketching the performers at work, moving from one position to another. In 1854, he left to Italy where he stayed 5 years studying the Italian art. Upon returning to Paris in 1859, he played an active role in the organization of their exhibitions between 1874 and 1886. Best known as a painter, Degas worked on photography, printmaking, as well as sculpting and there is arguably no more influential artist in the nineteenth century.
