Tips for Creating a Great Guest Room
Posted by RSO on 11th Nov 2015
It’s that time of year again . . . the holidays. Decorating, baking, shopping, holiday parties and house guests! However, when it comes to updating or decorating your home, the guest bedroom can sometimes get the short end of the stick. A great, usable guest room can be a wonderful thing to have, especially during the busy holiday season.
If you’re interested in getting on top of your guest room game — and creating a space that even you will want to spend the night in — here are Tips for Creating a Great Guest Room.
New Furniture
While some guests may be happy with an inflatable airbed or sleeping bag, why not make your guests feel like your home is their “home away from home”.
If you are just looking for a few new pieces to update your guest room, we carry a vast selection of bedroom furniture including traditional, contemporary and casual styles.
An upholstered headboard adds great style and can be an affordable option for a guest room. Whether it’s tufted, adorned with nail-heads or just beautiful plain fabric, it immediately transforms the look of a room. Your house guests would love to sit up to read or use their laptop and have something soft and cushy to lean against.
A daybed is a great choice and instantly transforms a small space from a sitting room into a cozy guest room. It differs from a standard bed in that it acts as a sofa during the day and turns into abed at night. Futons also offer an easy switch from a sofa to a bed and work great in small spaces.
Got grand kids? Bunk beds or twin beds are the perfect addition for a guest room or vacation home where children will visit.
If your guest is staying for a longer period of time, having a desk in the room allows them to work and keep their things neat and orderly.
Create an oasis for your guests while adding function and style to your guest room with a makeup vanity table. Featuring drawers for storage, a mirror and a comfortable bench, a makeup vanity table makes getting ready a breeze.
If your guest room has the space, consider adding an accent chest or accent chair . Accent chests are elegant, sophisticated and great for extra storage and are available in a variety of styles to complement your décor. Accent chairs are a perfect way to create a reading nook for your guests.
Besides the furniture basics, here are some other simple tips to make your guests feel at home.
Linens
Set out towels, extra blankets and pillows ahead of time. A few extra pillows in the closet always make for a nice surprise.
Guest Room Amenities
Pick up inexpensive luggage racks so guests have a designated space for their suitcase.
Make sure there are plenty of hangers in the closet.
A reading lamp and an alarm clock are nightstand essentials, but think about adding a few trays to corral loose items like wallets, change, glasses, and keys.
Phone charger cords
Motion-sensor night-light
Bathroom Basics
Make sure there are enough washcloths, towels, an extra box of tissues and extra toilet paper so that your guests do not have to be concerned about disturbing you. Add a basket with sample sized toiletries such as shampoo, conditioner, lotion, bath gel, toothpaste, toothbrush, razor and shaving cream to name a few.
The Little Extras
Flowers . . . the universal welcome sign
Bedside water carafe
Snacks
Reading material – books, magazines, newspapers, maps of the local area.
Basket of toys for kids
Keep a print of your wifi network and password framed in your guest bedroom. That way, they'll never have to ask!
Test Run
Finally, test the room yourself to make sure it is comfortable and to see what isn’t working. Perhaps a bedside lamp may need a brighter light bulb, blinds need dusting, cobweb on the ceiling, etc.
So don’t let the holidays and its accompanying guest season stress you out. Give your guest room a little face lift with some of these tips . . . and a few clicks. The only thing you have to worry about is that your guests may never leave!
