Tips for Choosing Your Home Office Furniture

Posted by RSO on 28th Dec 2015

The holidays are over and it’s time to plan for the New Year. Besides losing weight, getting organized is one of the top New Year’s resolutions made each year.

As much as we hate to admit it, we spend a lot of time working. Too many of us suffer in a poorly designed home office environment. A personalized work space and good quality makes all the difference in our productivity. Whether you are just looking for a new executive office desk or a complete update of your home office, here are a few tips for choosing your home office furniture.

Functionality

Before you start thinking about what home office furniture you will need, make a detailed list of your most basic office needs. The list should include items you must have for your home office such as a computer desk, fax, printer, wood file cabinets, bookcases, etc. When making your list, think about the ways in which you plan to use the office. If you are a graphic artist you may need space for a computer in addition to a larger work-space. If you are a consultant, you may need additional space such as wood file cabinets or bookcases and perhaps a place to meet with clients.

Style

There are many choices when it comes to home office furniture, and in particular the most central component - the office desk. While it may appear to be just a place for you to work, quality home office furniture should integrate your technology, promote efficiency and complement your home’s décor and style.

Whether you have a more traditional or contemporary décor, an executive office desk fits the bill. Home computer desks will also complement most home or office décor and are available in wood or metal finishes. A good desk includes wire management to keep unsightly cords out of view and storage to keep everyday items organized. In addition, a desk’s top needs to be durable so you need not be concerned about marring it or leaving a ring from your morning coffee.

Comfort

The location of your home office and the type of office chair you choose are the two most important factors when it comes to comfort. Home office locations can range from the corner of a family room to a dedicated office in a spare bedroom. Make sure your home office is removed from potential distractions such as the kitchen, family traffic and noise. The important thing is that you have a permanent space that is dedicated for work.

Next, select an office chair that is comfortable and matches your home or office décor. An executive office chair or a leather office chair works well with a more traditional style while a mesh office chair is the perfect complement for a contemporary home office.

Storage

Don’t forget all of the other elements that make up your office. A great desk is one thing, but if it is piled with paperwork and supplies it isn’t conducive to working. A wood file cabinet for your home office makes for a great accent piece that neatly organizes your important documents with style. If space is tight, consider adding bookcases to make use of vertical space.

In order to create an effective office, everything needs to have its place. Once you have everything organized, keep it that way! By paying attention to the details during the setup of your office, you can ensure that you have created a space where you actually want to work.
