How To Decorate Your Home Beautifully With Colors

Posted by BM on 10th Jul 2015

When it comes to decorating your home, the choices can be overwhelming. How many different shades of blue can there possibly be? Does that shade of green really work there? Interior design is definitely not as easy as it looks in a magazine or on television, but it doesn’t have to be an impossible task either. By using a few design principles, like the color theory, you can make decisions a little easier and with confidence.

How to Read the Wheel

The basic color wheel was designed by Sir Isaac Newton as a result of his prism experience in 1666. The primary colors are red, yellow, and blue. Secondary colors are green, orange, and violet. The colors in between are called tertiary colors and are a combination of primary and secondary colors. For example, the color yellow-green.

How You Can Use the Color Wheel in Your Home

You can decorate your home more easily if you choose a color scheme. You may choose “monochromatic”, which is choosing one color and using different shades that vary from light to dark. From your walls to your furnishings, by focusing on one color and layering different shades, you create an inviting space and give your eyes a way to move across the space. A monochromatic scheme is a good way to be used to having color in your space.

Using multiple analogous colors in your space is also an option. Analogous colors are hues on the color wheel that are beside each other. They look good together in a space and are a great way to branch out and add more color to your home. You can choose as few as two colors and as many as six to pair together to create the room of your dreams.

A complementary color scheme uses colors that are complementary to each other, or across from each other, on the color wheel. This is a bold choice and creates high contrast that is desirable in more modern designs.

A triad color scheme is just as bold as a complementary scheme, but it is more balanced. You can create your own triad scheme by choosing three colors that form a triangle in the middle of the wheel. Using home décor items that add splashes of color using your three colors is a good way to create a beautiful room.

By choosing your color scheme using a color wheel, you can make a confident interior design choice. Remember that a great way to dress up your home is by choosing new home décor items that work in your color scheme and layering them with furnishings to match.
