How to Choose the Best Daybed for Your Needs

Of New York City’s five boroughs, Brooklyn and Staten Island feature an interesting “phenomenon” existing between them. Despite being only 2.2 miles apart (at their closest geographically) before being linked together by the Verrazano-Narrows Bridge, there are two different and distinct accents spoken in each location. As such, referring to a Staten Islander as a Brooklynite, or vice versa, is a major insult to local residents!
The same holds true when referring to daybeds and futons... They are not the same! Although they both serve as a seating option during the day and a place to sleep at night, what differentiates them is how they are built and how each go about providing the user with comfort and versatility. The daybed is built like a traditional bed with respect to its frame and overall construction, usually sturdier and exuding a quality that many futons lack. Being that daybeds serve as seats during the day, their sides are symmetrical (imagine the arms of a couch) and feature, in essence, headboards on both ends, further adding to their strength. These traits, along with others seen below, combine to make the daybed a great choice for furnishing a studio apartment or guest bedroom with a quality sleeping solution.
Functionality
A daybed saves space by serving two roles in one great unit. However, their functionality doesn’t end there. Many daybeds feature a pull-out trundle bed, which maximize space by being equipped with a second twin mattress underneath the primary mattress… A real mattress, it should be noted, not those uncomfortable things futon manufacturers sell! This provides comfortable sleeping solutions for up to two people, all in a unit that takes up no more floor space than a traditional twin bed.
Style
Although basic design elements are shared among all daybeds, their styles cater to every major genre, including traditional, contemporary, and cottage. Additionally, there are a number of popular finishes available, including: black, white, walnut, cherry, oak and espresso. Variety allows you to choose a unit that will complement the existing décor of the room in which it will be placed. Or, you could select a daybed that could create a whole new look and let it serve as the focal point for an entirely new decorating direction!
Material
Like traditional beds, daybeds are typically constructed of wood or metal. Choosing one over the other is primarily a matter of preference as both provide strength, stability, and quality. Both materials also allow their designers freedom to be creative, and a wide variety of designs and design details are the result.
